The channels of perception — sight, sound, touch, motion — and the visual language interfaces speak through them.
A stress laid on one part so it stands out. Also the particular sound a speaker's origin gives their speech.
What a thing's form tells you it can do. A handle affords pulling; a flat plate affords pushing. Design is mostly this.
Akshara (Sanskrit akṣara: a letter, a syllable; and, as a-kṣara, THE IMPERISHABLE — that which does not wear away). An sfnt reader that names a typeface from its bytes, and NEVER THROWS: a file it cannot read comes back as a null face and one sentence saying why, because a font picker that throws on the seventeenth file in a folder has lost the other two hundred. It reads the table directory of a ttf, an otf, a ttcf collection and an uncompressed WOFF; the name table at its BEST-SCORING RECORD PER NAME ID — Windows Unicode in English first, then Windows Unicode in any language, then the Unicode platform, then Mac Roman, with an encoding it does not decode scoring zero and being skipped rather than guessed at — decoding UTF-16BE by hand, dropping an odd trailing byte because half a code unit names no character, and Mac OS Roman from Apple's own 128-character upper half written out in full, including that 0xF0 is Apple's logo and lives only in the private use area. It reads OS/2 for usWeightClass and usWidthClass, falling to 400 and 5 where a face declares neither and taking the italic bit from head's macStyle where there is no OS/2 at all; and fvar for a variable font's axes and its named instances, every coordinate read as signed 16.16 fixed point and tidied so 400 reads as 400, with a PostScript name per instance where the record is six bytes wider than its coordinates rather than four. PARTIAL READINGS ARE KEPT: a name record pointing outside the file is skipped and the records around it still read, so one bad string does not cost the whole table, and an instance record reaching past the end ends the walk rather than inventing the rest. Weight and width are given in words with the number KEPT where the face sits between two named steps, so 350 reads as Light (350) and not as a bare Light, and a width class outside 1..9 is named by its number. A WOFF2 and a zip are refused by WHAT THEY ARE, each with a sentence saying what to do instead. IT NAMES; IT DOES NOT DRAW — no glyph outlines, no cmap, no kerning, no shaping, no rasterising, no font loading. It takes bytes only: no host surface, no DOM, no disk, no clock, no network, zero imports. NO FONT SHIPS WITH IT: every font its proofs read is synthesised in the proof, byte by byte, with real table checksums.
The first letter, and how opaque a colour is. Also the earliest release — all three mean the beginning of a scale.
The making of a signal stronger without changing what it says. Amplification carries the noise up with it.
To give the appearance of life through movement. Its root is breath — to animate is to breathe into.
The giving of life to what has none. From breath - to animate is to breathe into a thing until it moves as if it were alive.
A mark that points, carrying direction and nothing else. The simplest instruction there is.
Sound, considered as something carried and stored. What reaches a mind through the ear.
The surface a scene is set against. It is chosen, and choosing it changes how everything in front reads.
What lies behind the thing attended to. Not empty and not neutral — it decides how the foreground reads.
A straight span used to hold, to block, or to measure. The same shape serves as support, barrier and scale.
Such that meeting it is its own reward. Beauty is a fact about the meeting, not a property held alone.
A struck vessel that sounds to be heard at a distance. A bell announces without saying what.
Short form of background. What lies behind the attended thing and conditions how it reads.
Absorbing all light and returning none. The absence of what would let a thing be seen.
To bring things together until the boundary between them is gone. Blending costs the separateness.
The colour of the far sky and deep water. Also low in mood — one of the oldest crossings between sight and feeling.
To soften edges until detail is lost. Blur removes information and can also remove exposure.
Heavier in weight so the eye goes there. Also unafraid — the same word for visual and personal prominence.
The edge of a thing, drawn so the edge can be seen. It marks where something ends without saying what lies beyond.
A bounded container with straight sides. A box's usefulness is entirely in its edges.
A declared width at which a layout changes shape. The point where a design admits the space has changed.
A bounded volume held by surface alone. Fragile, self-closing, shaped by pressure from both sides.
A small raised thing made to be pressed or fastened. Etymologically a bud - something that pushes out from a surface.
An instrument that fixes light into an image. Also the chosen viewpoint a scene is seen from.
A set shown one at a time in a turning order. It offers everything and shows almost nothing at once.
The bowed voice in the low register — the instrument whose range sits nearest the human speaking voice. Aethelred's own, and the sound the Sanctuary hears him in.
A control holding one independent yes or no. Unlike a choice among options, checking one says nothing about the others.
A bent mark pointing one way. Direction shown by shape rather than by an arrowhead.
A clear struck tone made to be noticed without alarming. Sound used as a gentle mark in time.
The purity or intensity of a colour, apart from how light or dark it is. Colour considered as itself.
The surrounding frame of an interface, as against its contents. Chrome is everything that is not the thing you came for.
Every point equally far from one centre. The shape with no beginning, which is why it means return and belonging.
Returning to where it began. Of a shape with no end, or a reasoning that assumes what it set out to show.
A single deliberate press. Also the sound of one — the interaction named for the noise it made.
The absence of strain a body registers before the mind notices. Comfort is a design outcome, not a luxury.
Free of strain a body would register. Comfort is a design outcome, not a luxury.
How much two things differ where they meet. Contrast is what makes anything legible at all.
What is laid over a thing to protect or conceal it. Also the outward face a work is met by.
Small signs that tell a mind what to do next. A cue works by being noticed without being read.
The mark showing where the next thing will land. It holds a position rather than a value.
The gradual reducing of a motion's swing. Damping is what stops a thing oscillating forever.
Without light. Also of material that is hard to look at — which in this house is witnessed with honour rather than flagged.
A surface showing many measures at once. It exists to make a state graspable in a glance.
Drawn as separated marks rather than one line. In this house's boards, a dashed edge means the format is not yet in the lexicon — an honest unknown, not an absence.
How far along a dashed line its pattern begins. A named drawing property rather than a concept.
Dath (Irish: colour — the thing itself, before anyone has an opinion about it). Colour measured rather than eyeballed: OKLCH lightness against the mode's band, OKLCH chroma against the floor below which a hue reads as grey, OKLab delta-E between slots under simulated protan and deutan (tritan reported) by the Machado-Oliveira-Fernandes 2009 transforms at severity 1.0, OKLab delta-E under NORMAL vision because full-colour readers must be able to tell neighbours apart too, and the WCAG contrast ratio of every mark against the surface. THE VERDICT IS A ROW, NEVER A BARE SCORE: each check returns its own name, its own state and a sentence with the offending values written into it, so a reader never goes looking behind a number to find which colour is the problem. WARN IS NOT FAIL AND THE DIFFERENCE IS RULED: adjacent CVD in the 6-8 band and contrast under 3:1 are WARNs legal only with mandatory secondary encoding, while the normal-vision floor is a HARD gate that secondary encoding does not excuse and weak pairs are not masked to keep an existing palette validating. Ordinal ramps take their own four checks — monotone lightness, a visible step gap, a light end that clears the surface, one hue — because the categorical checks fail a correct ramp by design. It measures and never decides: nothing here has taste, and the two structural rules that cannot be computed from hexes are named as uncomputable rather than pretended at. No clock, no disk, no network, no DOM, zero imports.
What is added for delight rather than for function. Decoration is not waste — it is where a made thing says it was cared about.
Of low light. Dimming reduces without removing, which is why it is gentler than turning off.
To set a thing out to be seen. Showing is a choice, and what is displayed is always less than what is held.
A mark that separates one part from the next. It adds nothing to either side and makes both legible.
The smallest mark that can be placed. It has position and no extent, which is why it means a point.
To move a thing by pulling it along a surface. Also resistance against motion — the same word for the act and what opposes it.
Fine matter settling on everything left alone. Dust is the visible measure of how long something has not been touched.
The shaping of a motion so it starts and stops gently. Movement made to feel like a body rather than a machine.
A sound returned by a surface, arriving later and changed. An echo proves both the sound and the room.
Listen — the imperative, one syllable, the whole instruction. Irish, éist. Not "hear," which happens to you, but "listen," which you do. Live monitoring: hearing yourself in the moment you are making the sound.
Raised above the surrounding level. Elevation buys visibility and separation at once.
Green gemstones, prized for depth of colour. In this house's palette, a named green rather than a general concept.
That which adjusts the balance across a range of frequencies. It changes what is heard without changing what was played.
So light and fine it seems not quite of the material world. Of what is present without weight.
The outward faces of a thing, met before anything within. What the world sees without entering.
The organ of sight, and a point of attention. Also what Odin paid with — the price of drinking from the well.
To lessen gradually until gone. A fade has no moment of ending, which is what distinguishes it from a stop.
To put into until nothing more fits, and the colour laid inside a shape. Both occupy an emptiness that was waiting.
Combustion — light and heat consuming what feeds it. Fire warms a hearth and takes a house, and it is the same fire.
Without variation in height. Also without depth of feeling — the same word for a plane and for a lack.
The capacity to bend without breaking, and to distribute space by need. Give, engineered on purpose.
Taking the shape of what holds it. Fluidity is adaptation without loss of substance.
To bend a thing over onto itself. Folding hides without removing, and every fold can be opened.
What stands in front and is attended to. The foreground is only legible because of what lies behind it.
The bound placed around a thing, deciding what is in and what is out. A frame is a claim about where a thing ends.
Resistance between two surfaces in contact. Friction slows things and is also what lets anything get a grip.
A movement made to mean something. A gesture communicates without words and can be misread exactly as words are.
A solid you can see through. Glass protects while showing, which is why it is the material of both windows and display cases.
Light given off steadily and without heat enough to burn. Presence made visible in the dark.
Of the colour and worth of gold. Also of a proportion found repeatedly in growing things and felt as right.
Moving or failing without harshness. Grace under failure is a design property, not a manner.
Grade: a look named as a key and resolved to a transform of a picture's own channels. Levels, curves, exposure, hue and saturation and lookup tables are the machinery beneath it, but a grade is not those numbers — it is the name, stored, and resolved at play time into a per-channel transform. Keys stored and numbers derived, the stage's law for motion, applied here to colour. A grade track carries the look across a row of shots, so a sequence changes its look shot by shot without one channel figure entering the board. A look key, a channel value and a moment in, the resolved per-channel transform out.
A gradual change across a span, with no step anywhere in it. Difference without a boundary.
The colour of living growth. Also meaning safe to proceed, and new to a thing.
A lattice of crossing lines giving every point an address. Order imposed evenly, so that position becomes meaning.
Belonging to touch. Of what a body learns through contact rather than through sight or sound.
Different notes sounding together well. Harmony requires difference — sameness produces unison, not harmony.
To mark a part so the eye goes there first. Highlighting adds no content and redirects all the attention.
An absence bounded by what surrounds it. A hole is a real feature made entirely of nothing.
A small area that responds when touched. Interaction concentrated where the shape gives no sign of it.
To rest near a thing without committing to it. Attention offered before action is taken.
A likeness that stands in for the thing itself. An image trusted to carry meaning without explaining it.
Surrounding rather than shown at a distance. Of a thing entered rather than looked at.
Space set at the start of a line to show it belongs under what came before. Structure shown by position alone.
Placed within the flow rather than set apart. Of a thing that runs alongside without interrupting.
Set inward from an edge. An inset creates margin from the inside rather than the outside.
Answering the one who acts on it. Of a thing that changes because you touched it.
The array of keys a body speaks to a machine through. For many, the most-used physical interface there is.
A named moment in a motion, from which the frames between are worked out. The points someone actually decided.
A held light carried into the dark. A lantern shows only a small circle and makes moving possible.
The arrangement of parts in a space. Where things are put, and what that placement says about their relation.
The vertical space between lines of text. Named for the strips of lead once set between them.
What light is bent through to make a thing visible. Also a chosen way of looking — every lens shows by excluding.
What makes seeing possible. Also of little weight — the same word for illumination and for ease.
A path of no width, and one row of written words. Also a descent of related beings, one after another.
How a thing appears to the eye. Appearance is real evidence and never the whole of what a thing is.
How much light a thing gives or reflects. Luminosity is what decides legibility before colour does.
The space kept outside a thing's edge. Room left deliberately unused, so the thing is not crowded.
Building by fitting solid pieces together without a regular grid. A layout where each block finds its own place.
Short form of microphone — what turns a voice into something that can be carried. A named instrument rather than a concept.
Able to be carried and used in motion. Of a thing that meets a body wherever it is.
Varied in order to carry something. Modulation is how a steady signal is made to hold meaning.

Sound ordered in time until it means something. The art that reaches a body before it reaches an argument.
A named colour in this house's palette, standing for connection and running theme. A named value rather than a general concept.
How much a thing blocks what lies behind it. Full opacity hides; none reveals.
A sphere considered as a whole thing. Having no face and no edge, it is the same from every side.
What exceeds the space it was given. Overflow must be handled deliberately, or it is simply lost.
A layer laid over another without replacing it. What is beneath stays, and is seen through or covered by choice.
Deliberate empty space held inside a boundary. Room kept so a thing does not press against its own edge.
The set of colours chosen to work with. A palette is a limit accepted so the whole will hold together.
A view wide enough to include what a single glance would miss. Breadth bought at the cost of detail.
The apparent shift of near things against far ones as the viewer moves. Depth revealed by motion rather than by sight alone.
A very small piece treated as indivisible. Also a small mark of movement in a rendered scene.

A control for choosing one from a shown set. It makes the range of the possible visible.
A small rounded form holding one thing. Also a rounded label carrying a single value.
The smallest addressable point of a shown image. Everything visible on a screen is made of these and none of them is visible alone.
Something standing in the position of what has not arrived. It holds the space and makes no claim to be the thing.
Where a thing is put. Placement carries meaning that the thing itself does not.
A surface that appears over what was there, uninvited. It takes attention by arriving.
A likeness of a particular person. Also taller than wide — the orientation named for the pictures it suits.
The first stage that raises a weak signal enough to be worked with. Everything after it inherits what it did.
To push with steady force. Also the making public of what was written — both apply pressure until something takes.
A showing of what a thing will be before it is committed. A preview reduces surprise at the cost of finality.
That which casts an image onto a surface. It shows something that is not where it appears to be.
A single beat in a repeating rhythm. A pulse says something is alive and running.
The colour between red and blue. Historically the costliest dye, which is why it came to mean sovereignty.
A control offering one choice from a fixed set, where choosing one unchooses the rest. Named for the buttons on a receiver.
The full spread of visible colour, made by light through water. Also a sign of belonging for those the world tried to exclude.
How easily a thing can be taken in by whoever meets it. Readability is a property of the writing, never of the reader.
Able to be taken in without strain. Readability is a property of the writing, never of the reader.
To turn a description into something perceivable. Rendering adds no meaning and decides how meaning arrives.
To change how much space a thing takes. Resizing alters the fit and not the thing.
Changing shape to suit the conditions it meets. Accommodation without loss of identity.
Retarget: the carrying of one body's motion onto another body's own vocabulary of motion. A reading is taken first, and a reading is a small model-free vocabulary of what a camera saw — head yaw, pitch and roll, jaw open, each eye's openness, brow raise, mouth width, gaze across two axes, each hand's openness and a few named hand shapes, every figure a scalar from zero to one or a degree. The retarget maps that reading onto a rig's tokens: a yaw becomes a turn to the left or to the right, a jaw becomes one of the four mouth shapes, an eye becomes open or closed, a brow becomes a raise, a hand becomes one of its poses. Thresholds, dead zones and which part answers which scalar are laws as data, never numbers buried in code. Nothing of the camera itself enters the word. A reading in, tokens per part out.
Colour stated as amounts of red, green and blue. A named encoding rather than a concept.
Colour stated as red, green, blue and how opaque it is. A named encoding rather than a concept.
A long narrow band, used to bind, to mark, or to honour. Its narrowness is what makes it a sign rather than a covering.
A closed circle, and the sounding of a bell. Both are things that return to themselves.
To turn about a centre. Also to replace in turn — the same word for spinning and for taking turns.
Turning about a centre. Also taking turns in order — both return to where they began.

A channel by which a body meets the world, and one meaning a word carries. Both are ways something arrives.
Belonging to the senses. Of what is met through the body rather than through argument.
A mark placed between things so each can be told from the next. It belongs to neither side.
The dark shape a thing casts by standing between a light and a surface. A shadow proves both the object and the light.
Light wavering across a surface. Also a moving placeholder that says content is coming.
To make visible to another. Showing is an act of choosing, since everything shown was selected from more.
A singer whose voice carries across water — a sound that finds you before you find it. Greek, Seirēnes. The voice is the whole of the word: what it calls you toward is never in the name.
The shaken instrument — a handheld frame of loose rods that sounds when moved. Latin, from Greek σεῖστρον, "that which is shaken"; carried in the old rites to move the air of a room and change what stands in it. Rhythm as a thing done to a space, not merely heard in one.
A control that moves along a range rather than choosing between named options. It offers degree instead of decision.
Without abrupt change or roughness. Smoothness is felt before it is noticed.
Absence of abrupt change. Smoothness is what makes a motion feel like a body rather than a machine.
To move sharply into an exact position. Snapping removes the in-between so nothing lands slightly wrong.
Words and music made one thing. A song carries meaning through a body rather than through argument.
The measured gaps between elements. Spacing is how a design says what belongs with what.
Small points of light appearing and going. Sparkle is delight made visible and adds nothing functional, which is the point.

A coil that returns to its shape after being pushed. Also the season of return, and a source of water rising.
Four equal sides at right angles. Also a public place a town gathers in — both are shapes made by agreement.
To offset things in time or space so they do not land together. Staggering spreads a load that would otherwise arrive at once.
A light seen from very far, and a mark meaning notable. Both are things picked out of a field.
