Old English dragan (to draw, pull), from which draught and draft both descend; a thing pulled into a first shape, not yet its final one.
Its root is the same pull that gives draw and draught: a draft is something dragged into a first shape rather than composed whole. What is pulled into shape this way is expected to be pulled again.
